We are on the rise

• The proportion of staff with PhD is currently at 21% (target is 60% in next 10 yrs)
• The per capita research publication output has increased to 0.45, closer to Inter University Council for East Africa norm of one publication per staff per year
• Ranking : UR is now the second most influential university in East Africa, in terms of the impact of its publications, as measured by the Normalized Citation Impact (Clarivate Analytics, 2016).
• The proportion of postgraduate students : Has increased from 2% to 5% in the past three years, and about 112 staff is registered for a PhD at UR
• The positioning of UR in the Web of Universities Rankings has improved to being in the Top 100 in Africa.

UR has competed successfully for 6 African Centres of Excellence in STEM areas and 2 other Centres were acquired through direct negotiation with UNESCO and ICTP.
Four Centres have a continental mandate and are funded by the World Bank as African Centres of Excellence (ACEs) :

• ACE in the Internet of Things
• ACE for Data Science
• ACE for Innovative Teaching and Learning in Mathematics and Science
• ACE in Energy for Sustainable Development

Four Centres have a regional mandate :
• CoE for Vaccines, Immunization, & Health Supply Chain Management, supported by the EAC and KfW
• CoE in Biomedical Engineering, supported by the African Development Bank
• East African Institute of Fundamental Research, a Category II UNESCO Centre supported by ICTP
• CoE in Biodiversity & Natural Resource Management, established with the supported by UNESCO

• The number of internationally collaborative papers from UR increased more than 12 times from 2006 to 2015
• A large proportion of UR papers included at least one international co-author, with the percentage of international collaborations ranging from 89.6% (2010) to 98.4% (2011).
• UR collaborated with a diverse group of countries, but the most frequent collaborators were the United States (256 papers), Belgium (91 papers), and South Africa (89 papers).

• University of Rwanda publications have also reached the top 10% most influential papers in the world. This is collated by the Essential Science Indicators which produces research performance of only the top 10% most influential papers, researchers, authors and institutions.
