The University of Rwanda has launched the University Centre of Arts at its Huye Campus, an initiative aimed at nurturing student creativity, promoting cultural expression, and strengthening the role of arts in education.
The Principal of College of Arts and Social Sciences, Dr Alphonse Muleefu, highlighted the importance of student-led initiatives in shaping campus life and building lasting connections among students.

At the launch ceremony, students showcased their talents across various discipline, including fashion design, painting, traditional dance, theatre, and more
“Student initiatives, including artistic activities, debating clubs, and other student organizations, make students feel at home during their four, five, or even six years at the university, creating emotional connections that remain even after their studies,” said Muleefu
The center will serve as a hub for nurturing talent, expanding knowledge, and empowering students to explore different forms of artistic expression such as music, theatre, painting, and traditional dance.
Prof. Anne Marie Kagwesage, Program Director of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Rwanda, described the reopening as more than the return of a facility.

As the guest of honour, the Vice Mayor of Huye District, André Kamana, emphasized the role of the arts in preserving Rwanda’s cultural heritage.
“The School of Arts on this campus will help us maintain and promote Rwandan culture through music, traditional dance, and other forms of art such as theatre and painting. This initiative will contribute significantly to the community of Huye District and Rwanda as a whole,” said Kamana.
The reopening of the University Centre of Arts marks a milestone for the University of Rwanda, offering students a space to develop their talents, embrace cultural expression, and contribute to the country’s creative and cultural industries.
