Guidelines on Academic Programmes Offered at The University Of Rwanda (UR)

Note: This document serves only as a guide of academic programmes offered in the constituent Colleges of the University of Rwanda and is not meant for selection.

  1. Introduction

The undergraduate programmes are offered in the following six constituent Colleges:

  • College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), based at Huye Campus, but also with programmes taught at Nyarugenge Campus
  • College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM), based at Busogo Campus, but also with programmes taught at Huye, Nyagatare, Nyarugenge and Rubirizi Campuses
  • College of Business and Economics (CBE), based at Gikondo Campus, but also with programmes taught at Huye, Nyagatare and Rusizi Campuses
  • College of Education (CE), based at Remera Campus, but also offering affiliated programmes by the Teacher Training College at Rukara Campus
  • College of Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS), based at Nyarugenge, but also with programmes taught at Nyamishaba, Kicukiro and Huye, with nursing and midwifery at Nyagatare, Byumba, Kibungo, Rwamagana and Kabgayi Campuses
  •  College of Science and Technology(CST), based at Nyarugenge Campus, but also with programmes taught at Huye, Nyagatare, and Musanze (National Police Academy) Campuses.

2. Admission Requirements

2.1. Advanced General Certificate of Secondary Education

New applicants to undergraduate degree programmes must be in possession of the Advanced General Certificate of Secondary Education, with at least two principal passes in the relevant subject combinations.

2.2. Alternative Qualifications

Candidates with alternative qualifications will be considered for admission into degree and diploma programmes on the basis of equivalences determined by the Colleges. However, foreign qualifications must be evaluated by the Rwanda Education Board (REB) prior to registration

3. Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction at the University of Rwanda is English. Applicants will be tested for proficiency in English at a period which will be determined by the University of Rwanda before the commencement of lectures. Those not meeting the requirements will have to register for and pass English courses offered by language units in the respective Colleges.

4. Subject Requirements and Levels of Perfomance

Subject requirements and minimum level of performance in terms of points in the subject combinations relevant to specific programmes are set by the respective Colleges. The points are determined from calculations of weighted points for the award of an Advanced General Certificate of Secondary Education as shown in the table below:

5. General Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants for programmes in the Colleges of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS), Business and Economics (CBE) and Education (CE), must have two (2) Principal passes with at least eighteen (18) points in specified courses relevant to the programmes applied for;

Applicants for programmes in the Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM), Medicine and Health Sciences (CMHS) and Science and Technology (CST), must have two (2) Principal passes with at least twenty four (24) points in specified courses relevant to the programmes applied for.

In addition, all applicants must have:

a) A pass in General Paper. Applicants without a pass but meeting the minimum criteria in terms of Principal subjects passes, shall qualify for admission but shall be required to pass a special common course offered by UR, prior to graduation;

b) An English Language Proficiency Test Certificate. Applicants without proof of English proficiency will be required to register for and pass an English language course offered by the respective Colleges. The pass mark for English proficiency test is 70%.
