University of Rwanda Center for Conflict Management (UR CCM) organized an International Peace Week from 17th October, 2017 up to 25th October, 2017 at its Headquarters in Gikondo.
The celebration includes engaging dialogues between academia and practitioners of peace and students, sharing experiences about peace and organizing events which increase the awareness to promote education for peace among Rwandan youth with a broader view of promoting peace in Rwandan Families.
The 2017 International Day of Peace Theme “Together for Peace, Respect, Safety and Dignity for All” falls under the Center For Conflict Management mission and vision which is to promote the culture of peace in Rwanda, the Great Lakes region of Africa and Globally. At the National level the Peace Day will focus on the role of families; hence the theme: “Peaceful families, peaceful nation”.
The day was also blessed by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Rwanda Prof. Philip Cotton. In his speech, Prof. Cotton welcomed students present as members of family. “Peace building has to start with the family and UR is a family. We give space to students to witness the development of youth”, he said. He invited students to be good promoters of peace and work together for peace building.
In his address to the participants, the Director of UR CCM Prof. Masabo Francois recalled the role of the Center in promoting peace through different activities such as teaching, doing research, organizing conferences and events about peace, conflicts and security. He said, “The target is to engage more people in dialogues about peace to practice peacekeeping that will lead in promoting educational programs”. He added that these dialogues will contribute to both the role of youth and family members in general in promoting peace towards mutual respect, safety and dignity for all.
Similar activities will also take place in UR Busogo and Huye Campuses respectively on 18th & 25th October, 2017.
