UR students Reach Quarter Finals in East Africa University Debate Championship 2017

University students from different East African community states namely Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania gathered in a training at the University of Rwanda, College of Education. The aim of the training was to share ideas through debates with theme “home grown solutions, a catalyst for the sustainable development of EAC partner states”. This event called East Africa University Debate Championship (EAUDC) occurs annually with goal to enhance and enrich a continuous cooperation amongst university students and youths from the partner states and also entice them to heavily advocate for regional integration programs/agenda. Students at the end of the training undergone through six preliminary debate rounds before moving on with quarter, semi and finals.

This is a good experience to students in University of Rwanda because it builds their capacity as far as critical thinking and leadership is concerned. In addition, students from Rwanda got to learn a lot about the EAC integration and share it with other students through debating clubs that they belong to. This annual event also fosters the spirit of patriotism and pan-Africanism in students who participated as the motions given relate to how they can get solutions for their nations and Africa in general. At the end of the day the team that represented University of Rwanda made it to the quarter finals and came out with a lot more knowledge ready to share with other fellow students.

Members of the Pan African University Debate Champion held in ACCRA-Ghana in 2015 agreed on preparing East Africa University Debate Championship (EAUDC) as an annual event.
