Lund University Officials from Sweden visit UR

On Wednesday the 23rd August 2017 a delegation from Lund University visited the University of Rwanda to discuss possible areas of future collaboration. The visiting team was led Prof. Magnus Jirström, a Prof. at the Dept of Human Geography and accompanied by Prof. PetterPilesjö, specialist in Geographical Information Science (GIS) Prof. Yvonne Granfeldt, Food tech, Prof Sven Carlsson, Informatics, Assoc. Prof. Bo Andersson, Informatics, Assoc. Prof Eva Brodin, Psychology Educational Science, Dr. Pär Svensson, External Relations, Senior Officer, Africa desk.

The team was welcomed by the UR senior management led by the Chancellor, Prof. Mike O’Neal, who is also the President Emeritus of Oklahoma Christian University, the Vice Chancellor Prof.Phil Cotton, together with Prof. Nelson Ijumba the deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of academics and research and Amb.Dr.Charles Murigande, in whose docket the affairs of UR’s advancement are assigned.

In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor said that UR is looking forward to having strong partners such as Lund University that can play a role in enabling it achieve its mission.
Founded in 1666, Lund University (350 years old) is one of Sweden’s best universities with a student population of 41,000of which 15% are international students and employs 7500 staff members.

The proposed interdisciplinary clusters UR intends to collaborate with Lund University include:

-Agriculture transformation and food security
-Social economic transformation and sustainable development
-Environment and Natural resources management and climate change
-Inclusive governance, peace and security
-Urbanisation, green cities and human settlements
-Transformation, ICT and knowledge management
-Health and wellbeing for all
-Sustainable energy and manufacturing
-Transformative education, cultures and creative arts
-Transport and Logistics

The delegation from Lund University will also tour some of UR’s colleges facilities and hold meetings with specialized cluster champions.
