Dr. Adam Bitunguramye, UR Alumnus

Dr. Adam BITUNGURAMYE has graduated in August, 2017 from the University of Rwanda College of Medicine and Health Science. He was privileged to participate in the 4th social medicine course entitled “beyond the biological basis of disease, social and economic causation” in Mirebalais, Haiti.

How did you end up going in Haiti?
As an intern medical doctor I was privileged to participate in the 4th social medicine course entitled “beyond the biological basis of disease, social and economic causation” in Mirebalais, Haiti. Last year I participated as a student but this time I have been acting as an assistant professor for the same course this year 2017. It was an amazing experience that I can’t help sharing that great achievement with the students to awaken their interest in social medicine which applies the biopsychosocial approach in the care of a patient and which recognizes health as human right.

What can you tell students in Medicine and Pharmacy?

I would encourage the students to apply for that vital course which takes place every year in July, Haiti, because as a multicultural class they get an opportunity to meet different students from across the globe with different backgrounds and perspectives about social medicine. It would also be a chance to meet some of the world leaders in Global health. The other particularity is that the course is taught utterly in French for the whole duration.

Has your participation as an assistant professor brought you an added value?

As an assistant professor you acquire much knowledge not only from the staff but also from students and by bridging the students to staff you gain an unbelievable experience. Finally it is important to mention that the best students can apply for being assistant professor for the next class.
