Community outreach is one of the responsibilities of the University of Rwanda. From 2-4 May, the College of Agriculture, Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine (UR-CAVM) trained 20 potato farmers from across the country on Good Agricultural Practices.
The training aims at enabling big potato growers to get an international certificate called "Global GAP", which would allow them to access bigger international markets. Speaking during the opening of the training, Dr. Laetitia NYINAWAMWIZA, the Principal of UR-CAVM thanked the farmers who accepted to put aside their businesses and engage with the University of Rwanda team to discuss on good practices to improve the quality of potato needed for international markets. She exhorted them to mobilize fellow farmers to register and participate in short term trainings that the University offers for them to remain competitive.

Among the participants include 3 women and 1 person with visual impairment who are actively involved in good quality potato production. The workshop was organised in collaboration with a Dutch partner, Q-Point, in the framework of the project entitled "Capacity building for food security through sustainable potato value chain development in Rwanda (NICHE RWA/185). CAVM pays special attention to (inter)national market quality and food safety issues.
