Calling for SDSN GL Youth - Network Coordinator

The Sustainable Development Solutions Network (www.unsdsn.org) was launched by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in August 2012. The network is led by Professor Jeffrey D. Sachs and mobilizes scientific and technical expertise from academia, civil society, and the private sector in support of sustainable development at local, national, and global scales. The SDSN is building a global network of universities, research centers, civil society organization, and other knowledge institutions to support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). National and Regional SDSNs support the localization of SDGs and their implementation, develop long-term transformation pathways for sustainable development, promote education around Agenda 2030, and launch solution initiatives.

The Great Lakes Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN GL) Youth hosted by the University of Rwanda-College of Business and Economics, is seeking a dynamic and talented individual to fill the position of the role of Network Coordinator.

What is SDSN Youth?

"Empowering youth globally to create sustainable solutions"

SDSN Youth is a division of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network; a new program to amplify the tremendous energy and capabilities of youth in generating broader buy-in for the SDGs by mobilizing resources and building capacity to empower action. The network was launched at the Leadership Council in Paris (June 2015).

1. Educateyoung people about the SDGs and encourage them to prioritize their implementation.

2. Integrateconcerns and views of young people into the pathways for achieving the SDGs.

3. Provide a platform for young people from different communities to connectand share ideas and experiences that address the challenges of sustainable development.

4. Support andcelebrateprojects that are aimed towards achieving the SDGs.

Network Coordinators are the official managers of SDSN Youth within their network and country/region. They serve as the link between SDSN Youth and the Regional/National SDSN Chair/Manager.

The primary responsibilities of Network Coordinator include:

1. Management

A Network Coordinator may recruit a team of up to 3 young volunteers (also known as Campus Coordinators) to assist him/her with day to day activities. The effective management of these volunteers (Campus Coordinators) will be crucial for the success of SDSN Youth. Therefore, as the leader of the team, Network Coordinators are responsible for the effective and efficient, on• boarding, training and monitoring of these volunteers (Campus Coordinators). An effective team means an effective network - so the management of these individuals will be critical for best results.

2. Engagement

a. SDSN has over 500 Member Institutions, many of them universities and colleges. Similarly, every SDSN Regional/National Network has several member universities. Each of these universities is host to 1000s of students and 1000s of student organisations. Network Coordinators and their team of volunteers (Campus Coordinators) should engage with these students and groups with the aim of mobilizing them behind the Sustainable Development Goals, through various projects, activities, events and forums.

3. Reporting

a. As a virtual network, it is ABSOLUTELY critical for Network Coordinators to communicate effectively and report back to their manager/chair, team of volunteers (Campus Coordinators) and the SDSN Youth global team every week. In a network which operates across several time zones, reporting and communicating pro-actively is crucial and without the network would fail.

PRIMARY Criteria

At time of applying for this role:

  • Candidate MUST be based at the University of Rwanda-College of Business and Economics - either as an official student or employee (some exceptions may apply with approval of SDSN Youth Executive).
  • Candidate MUST possess a good command of the English language.
  • Candidate MUST demonstrate that they have the time and resources to commit to this role - candidates with full time jobs and overlapping commitments will be exempt from running for this position.
  • Candidate MUST be able to commit at least between 15-20 hours per week for this role.
  • Candidate MUST be aged between 21-30 in order to be eligible for this role.
  • Candidate MUST be nominated by their respective Network Chair or Manager to be considered eligible.

SECONDARY Criteria

At the time of applyingfor this role:

  • KNOWLEDGE - Candidate SHOULD be able to demonstrate that they have a good knowledge of the SDSN, its structure, vision and objectives at the time of applying.
  • COMMITMENT- Candidate SHOULD be able to demonstrate that they are committed to the vision of the Network and capable of working in compliance with the norms, and standards set by SDSN Youth and their respective Regional/National Networks.
  • EXPERIENCE - Candidate SHOULD have completed a degree in the relevant field of work OR have the necessary past experiences to qualify for such a role, including experience in management, research, policy-design etc.
  • PUBLIC SPEAKING - Candidate SHOULD be a confident and passionate speaker, capable of communicating well with stakeholders and partners.
  • DISCIPLINE - Candidate SHOULD be incredibly well disciplined and have excellent organisational and management skills.
  • FLEXIBILITY - Candidate SHOULD be flexible and capable of working with multiple deadlines and coordinate activities with multiple time zones - this may include late night calls and meetings.
  • VERSATILITY - Candidate SHOULD be versatile, especially in dealing with the challenges posed by a newly formed, constantly changing and rapidly expanding organisation.
  • TEAMWORK- Candidate SHOULD have excellent team work skills and capable of managing groups of volunteers and team members effectively.
  • EFFICIENCY - Candidate SHOULD be able to work efficiently and meet deadlines - despite multiple priorities.

Total Weekly Hours:

  • 18-20 hours per week
