Background Information 

In the framework  of  iCARE  (Improved  Cassava  Virus Resistance:  Mitigation  Strategies  and Development  of a disease  free seed system) project,  a collaborative  research project between ULg  (Universite  de  Liege),  UCL  (Universite  Catholique  de  Louvain),  UR  (University  of Rwanda),  1 PhD training  opportunity  has  been  granted  to  University  of Rwanda,  College of Agriculture, Animal Sciences and Veterinary Medicine (UR CAVM).

UR-CAVM is recruiting a candidate for PhD studies in Plant Breeding and Phytopathology. Interested candidates are hereby invited to apply for a four years sandwich PhD study program from 2017-2021.

Eligibility

The applicant must:

  • be a staff member of the University of Rwanda (UR),
  • be holding  a  MSc  degree  (or  equivalent)  in  fields  related  to  the  position  or  have knowledge in at least two of the following research fields: breeding, genetics, phytopathology, molecular biology,  bioinformatics.
  • be a Rwandan Academic and/or Research staff working in the UR,
  • be ready to continue as an academic staff in the University of Rwanda upon completion of PhD studies to contribute to research and teaching in the UR-CAVM;
  • be able to stay in Belgium from 4 to 6 months per year during the four next years;
  • demonstrate the ability to think and work independently and in a team setting

Interested applicants are to submit the following sets of documents according to deadlines specified below;

  • An application letter in English  for a Scholarship  for PhD studies  in Plant breeding& Phytopathology;
  • Form 5 filled in and signed to download from (http://www.researchdirectorate.ur.ac.rw),
  • A concept note for the research to undertake during the PhD studies,
  • An updated CV in English (maximum five pages) which includes a description of current research interests,
  • A copy of the master's thesis work written in English,
  • A certified copy of MSc degree (or equivalent),
  • A certified copy of Bachelor degree,
  • A proof of English language proficiency (TOEFL test or others),
  • Two recommendation letters in English,
  • Copy of National Identity and passport,
  • Three recent passport photos.

Note: The concept Note must also include:

Project Title: (not more than 20 words) Ph.D Research area and Discipline:

Project summary: An overall description of your anticipated PhD research concept, within iCARE frame (max. 500 words)

Project Problem and Output: Description and background of the research problem (s) you intend to address (300 words) and descriptions of outputs you expect to realize.

Literature review:   Provide a description of the methodology and research approach that have been used by previous researcher on the problems you wish to research in your PhD studies.

SelectionThe short-listed candidates shall be interviewed by a panel formed by the UR Directorate of Research, Innovation and Postgraduate studies and appointed scientists from UR-CA VM,and ULg (Universite de Liege) or UCL (Universite Catholique de Louvain).
